A–Z Google Analytics glossary covering the most important GA4 terms in simple language.
A — Acquisition
The process of attracting users to your website or app. GA4 includes User acquisition and Traffic acquisition reports.
B — Bounce Rate
The percentage of sessions that were not engaged sessions. In GA4, it is essentially the opposite of Engagement Rate.
C — Campaign
A marketing initiative used to identify and measure traffic from specific promotional activities.
D — Dimensions
Attributes used to describe your data, such as Country, Device category, Page title, or Traffic source.
E — Engagement Rate
The percentage of sessions that were engaged sessions. An engaged session generally lasts more than 10 seconds, includes a key event, or has at least two page/screen views.
F — Funnel
A sequence of steps users are expected to complete, such as viewing a product, adding it to a cart, and making a purchase.
G — Google Analytics 4 (GA4)
Google's current analytics platform for measuring user activity across websites and apps.
H — Homepage
The main or primary page of a website. GA4 can track visits and interactions with the homepage like any other page.
I — Item
A product or service that can be tracked in GA4 ecommerce reports, such as a product in an online store.
J — Journey
The sequence of interactions a user has with your website or app, from acquisition through engagement and conversion.
K — Key Event
An event that you have identified as especially important to your business, such as a purchase, signup, or lead submission.
L — Landing Page
The first page a user visits during a session. It is often used to evaluate the performance of marketing campaigns and SEO traffic.
M — Metrics
Quantitative measurements in GA4, such as Users, Sessions, Views, and Event count.
N — New Users
Users who interacted with your website or app for the first time, according to GA4's measurement criteria.
O — Organic Search
Traffic that comes to your website through unpaid search-engine results.
P — Page View / Views
The number of times a webpage or app screen was viewed.
Q — Query
A search term or request used to retrieve information. In Google Search Console integrations, queries can refer to search terms that generated impressions and clicks.
R — Referral
Traffic that arrives at your website through a link from another website.
S — Sessions
A group of user interactions with your website or app within a given period.
T — Traffic Acquisition
A GA4 report that shows how users arrive at your website or app, using dimensions such as Source, Medium, and Campaign.
U — Users
People who interact with your website or app. GA4 provides different user-related metrics, including Total users and Active users.
V — Views
The number of webpages or app screens viewed by users.
W — Web Stream
A GA4 data stream that collects data from a website.
X — X-axis
The horizontal axis of a GA4 chart, typically showing dimensions such as dates or other categories.
Y — Year-over-Year (YoY)
A comparison of performance during one period with the same period in the previous year.
Z — Zero-Value Data
Data where a metric has a value of zero, such as zero users, conversions, or purchases for a particular dimension or period.
